ALTERING AN EXISTING ROUTE - REMOVING A LOCATION / SECTION

The most common task which is needed once a route has been planned usually involves adding or removing sections of a planned route. In order that you don't have to go through and re-create the route from scratch, Canal Planner has the facility to add and remove sections either to/from the end, or to/from the middle of a planned route. When sections are removed from a route Canal Planner will automatically join up the route using A-to-B logic.

Step 1 - Load up saved route

In the example shown below our amended (to include a section on the Caldon Canal) has been loaded.

Step 2 - Select the location / section which is to be removed

In the example shown the stopping point at the end of the Caldon was added to the 4 countries ring route. This can be removed by highlighting the section we want to remove (3rd row down), clicking the Route Section Tab, and clicking the 'Remove this section from route' button.

Step 3 - Success!

If Canal Planner has successfully been able to remove the section from the route (there are scenarios where this would not be possible), then you should receive the following confirmation.

A look at the planned route section indicates that in fact the location and section on the Caldon Canal has been removed.

Important:

There are scenarios where the removal of one section may leave other redundant sections in the route. This will only usually happen when a location / section has been added and Canal Planner has had to add additional sections in order to plan the route. In the example above we can see that there is still a remaining section on the Caldon, but because there is no stopping point, the route does not travel along the Caldon Canal (as can be seen by the map). There is no issue leaving this in the planned route as it will have no bearing on times, miles and locks, however if you wish to remove this as well, then you simply need to follow the same process again.
