PLANNING A MANUAL ROUTE

Planned Route

In this section of the screen you will see the sections of your journey as you add new location and build up your route. Clicking on each of these sections will highlight the section on the map.

Underneath the list of sections a summary of the trip totals are displayed:

·         Distance

·         Duration

·         Locks

Map

An illustrative map is displayed at the top right of the screen. The map will change automatically depending on the context at the time. Unlike the main map you will not be able to control this map at all, other then choosing using the settings menu and selecting or de-selecting the option to ‘show cities on map’

Route Options Tab

Within the Route Options tab you should enter the name of your route. You should make the route name something meaningful as the route name will be used to load up the route.

The show intermediate locations tick box will toggle on or off whether the Planned Route list will show only the sections of the journey, or whether all the intermediate locations in-between each of the selected sections should be shown in the list.

Partition Route Options - See Partitioning a Route for more information on dividing up a route.

Add Locations Tab

To add a new section to the trip, you will use the add location functionality. In order to ad a new location you will need to:

1)      Select a waterway from the drop down list with ‘Adjoining waterways only’ option selected (default).  This enables you to build up the route section by section (As per Canal Planner 7) because only valid adjoining waterways will ever be displayed in the waterways drop down list.

2)      Select a waterway from the drop down list with ‘Any waterway (finds quickest route)’ selected. This enables you to add a location from any waterway (not just the adjoining waterway). Canal Planner will then find the quickest route from the previous added location to this new location.

3)      Enter some text into to the ‘Search for location box’, and click ‘Search for location’. This method will present a list of matching locations for you to choose from. Please note that if you have adjoining waterways only selected the set of matching results will be limited to locations on adjoining waterways.

You will notice (if not the start location) that the list of locations has a location called ‘no stopping point’. This location can be used if you don’t wish to log a particular location in the route summary.

Selecting ‘my locations only’ will only show locations which are also in the ‘my locations’ list.

The section options values at the bottom are provided such that if the section you are adding will have different values to the rest of the journey, you can configure this section only to have alternative values to the rest of the route. This is a common selection when your route contains a section on a river.

You should notice that as you select different waterways and locations, the map will change to illustrate where on the waterways system the selected waterway or location resides.

Once you have selected your waterway and location (or ‘no stopping point’) then you can click the ‘Add Location to route’ button to add this new section to the Planned Route area. If you have not selected an ‘adjoining waterway’ you may find that a number of sections are added to the route.

INSERTING A LOCATION/SECTION INTO THE MIDDLE OF A ROUTE

In order to add a new location / section into the middle of a route, you should highlight the section which you want to come before the new location. You can then find a location as detailed above, but instead of using 'Add Location' which will add a location to the end of the route, you should use 'Add location after selected point'

Route Section Tab

Once a route section has been added to the route, if you click an individual section you will see that

1)      The map changes to display this section on the map

2)      If the route section tab you will see a list of location comprising the section. Clicking on a location will display the features at that location and also any photograph.

It is here that it is then possible to make changes to the section if desired.

Section Speeds: You can update the calculation variables for this section. Speed, Lock delay and moveable bridge delay. Any changes to these values will apply to this section only.

Moor-up overnight:

You can select a location from a section and tick 'moor up overnight'. This is used to manually divide up your route into a number of days. When you select 'Update this section' you will see that the planned route section now divides your route into more than one day.

In order to save any changes you will need to click ‘Update this section’.

For more information, see Partitioning a Route.

Remove this section from route:

Remove section enables you to delete the highlighted section of your route.
