PLANNING A 'HOW FAR CAN I GET' ROUTE

Step 1

Step 2

Step 2 requires you to choose a starting location. You can select this location in one of 3 ways.

You also need to define the length of your trip by entering:

Once you have selected a location and completed the 'Time Allowance' section, clicking ‘Next >’ will take you to the next step.

If performing a round-trip route, you should be aware that

  1. The return journey will the outbound journey reversed.  If you want to plan a route involving the same start and finish location and a loop or ring of somekind, then you should use the A-to-B planning method.
  2. The How Far Can I Get planning tool will always make your furthest destination either a junction or a turning point, as it assumes that a boat cannot just turn anywhere.  If you have a craft which you can turn anywhere, or you expect your final destination to be on a waterway which is wide enough to turn your boat (e.g. River Thames), then you should not use the round trip functionality.  Instead you should halve your Time Allowance and plan a one way trip, in order to get the furthest location.

Please note: Calculating how far routes, when you have clicked 'Next >' may take several minutes. Time will depend on the amount of time you have allowed for your route and the speed of your PC.

The progress of the search is shown on screen and at any point you can press ESC which will stop the search and return all the routes found up until that point.

Step 3

Step 3 will display a brief summary of the calculated route(s), including number of junctions, total miles, total locks and total time.

Clicking Finish will take you to the Route Summary screen for this route.
