ALTERING AN EXISTING ROUTE - ADDING A LOCATION / SECTION
The most common task which is needed once a route has been planned usually involves adding or removing sections of a planned route. In order that you don't have to go through and re-create the route from scratch, Canal Planner has the facility to add and remove sections either to/from the end, or to/from the middle of a planned route. When sections are added to a route, Canal Planner will use the A-to-B logic to get from the existing location to the new location being added.
Step 1 - Load up a saved route.
In the example shown below, the Four Counties Ring route has been loaded.

Step 2 - Select the leg before the one where we want to the new location
The most common alteration to a route is where it is decided that it would be nice to spend a couple of days traveling up a waterway which comes off of the planned route. In the four counties ring example above, the change to the route is that we are going to travel to the end of the Caldon Canal as part of the route. As the Caldon comes off the Trent and Mersey, the first section needs to be selected, which is the Trent & Mersey section.
Also, a new location needs to be added through which the route should travel. Using the Add Location tab, and selecting the option 'Any Waterway (finds quickest route)', the Caldon Canal can then be selected from the drop down. Highlight the location to which you wish to travel. Note: if this location is the furthest point you want to travel along a waterway, you need to ensure that you select a location which is a turning point, junction, or is on a waterway wide enough to turn your boat.

You will notice that the 'Add location after selected point' button is now enabled, where previously it was disabled.

If you want to add your selected location to the end of the route, you would click the 'Add location to the end of route' button, but in this example we want to add it into the middle of the route, so click 'Add location after selected point'
Step 3 - Success!
If Canal Planner has successfully been able to add the section into the route (there are scenarios where this would not be possible), then you should receive the following confirmation.

A look at the planned route section, also indicates that it was successful as the new section on the Caldon has clearly been added and the time, miles and locks statistics updated.
